Lesson Plans

I have compiled various lesson plans and worksheets for units covered in most basic biology classes.  You are free to use these for your own classes.  Most of the content is not your traditional lesson plan (where you have objectives and resources and attention grabbers) but is simply a worksheet that is ready to pass out to your students.   You will not find the answer keys because students will use this site to make copies of assignments they have lost or missed.

You are also free to modify these for your own curriculum and style.   Many are in constant states of revisions as I find better ways to present information and guide the students in their learning processes.

The lessons are organized by THEMES, see the menu list that says “worksheets by topic.”

Anatomy (Dissections)

This page has various dissections of animals commonly seen in a basic biology class:  squid, frogs, fetal pig,  crayfish, earthworm, rat, planarian, and fish.

Sample:  Frog External Anatomy – legs, eyes, mouth structures, first day of dissection

Scientific Method

Here you will find various experiments and lessons that often serve as introductory concepts.   Students learn to observe, gather data, design experiments, and analyze charts and graphs.  Also included are simple experiments that can be performed in a short period of time (1 – 2 days) that illustrate the methods used in science.  This page also has lessons related to the use of the microscope and its parts.

Sample:  Sponge Animals – quick lab using capsules and water (toys) to collect data on how fast the “animals” grow

Cells

Worksheets include anatomy of the cell (plant, animal, bacteria) as well as labs related to the cell (cheek cell, onion cell).  Included are cellular processes, such as mitosis and diffusion.

Sample:  Animal Cell Coloring – color a typical animal cell

Evolution and Taxonomy

Resources for teaching evolution, includes several simulations and graphic organizers.  Taxonomy section has many dichotomous keys to aid in teaching how biologists identify organisms.  Phylogeny pages deal with grouping and naming organisms.

Sample:  Evolution Concept Map – graphic organizer on the Theory of Evolution, students fill in terms

Genetics

Many worksheets for students to practice punnett squares.  There are also labs that illustrate probability and how to compare actual data to expected data.  Section also includes concepts related to DNA, and meiosis.

Sample:  DNA Analysis – simulate DNA recombination using paper slips and sequences

Phyla

This page is a compilation of various animal groups, such as arthropods, birds and mammals.  Most are worksheets that focus on anatomy and adaptations.  This page also includes a section on the Kingdom Protista.

Sample:  Sponge Coloring – anatomy of the sponge, color the structures according to the directions

Plants

Section covering the basics of botany such as plant anatomy and reproduction.  There are also several experiments related to plants and photosynthesis.

Sample:  Photosynthesis Simulation – measure rates of ATP production while changing light intensity and CO2 levels

Ecology

Includes many worksheets on the food web and terminology of ecology (population, community, biomes..ect).  Also includes a section related to environmental issues (pollution, overpopulation..etc).

Sample:  Owl Pellets – dissect owl pellets, reconstruct skeletons and create a food web.
