Mini-Case: Thermoreceptors and Nociceptors

Help students explore the fascinating biology behind pain with this engaging case study on thermoreceptors, nociceptors, and homeostasis. Students follow the story of a teenage athlete who trains in both scorching summer heat and freezing winter. Readers will investigate why extreme temperatures trigger pain and how the nervous system protects the body from injury. The story is short, hence “mini-case” and can be completed in a short period or at the end of class. The writing portion may take students longer. I generally, post the writing assignment on student LMS (Google Classroom).

Throughout the activity, students learn how specialized sensory receptors detect temperature changes, how pain signals travel through the nervous system, and why sensations such as burning and numbness occur.

Students then engage in a final task of linking all of the physiological changes that take place to cases of paradoxical undressing. This phenomenon occurs when people suffer long term exposure to extreme cold. They are often found undressed, which is likely a behavioral response to feeling hot. The sensation relates to mixed signals from the nervous system as they experience hypothermia.

This real-world case study is an excellent addition to units on the nervous system, sensory receptors, homeostasis, human physiology, or anatomy and physiology, encouraging students to connect scientific concepts with everyday experiences while practicing evidence-based reasoning and data interpretation.

This resource also includes a rubric for grading the student’s CER (Claim-Evidence-Reasoning).
