How Do Viruses Infect Cells (Coloring)?

virus coloring

A simple worksheet that explains how viruses infect cells which include diagrams to label and an image of a typical virus for students to color the envelope, proteins, DNA, and the capsid.  Questions within the reading keep students focused on the important details of viral infections.

This was created for a basic level biology class, so it does not include details about the lytic or lysogenic cycle or other more complicated details that would be included in a college-track class.

This worksheet was included in a larger unit on the immune system, viruses and bacteria where I focused of concepts that young adults need to know, such as how vaccines work and why it is important to finish a prescription of antibiotics.  The guiding question for the unit was “How does the body fight infectious diseases?”

The entire unit is included on my Introductory Biology class page where you can also find google slides and guided notes for the immune response unit and other topics.

Grade Level: 8-10
Time Required:  20-30 minutes

HS-LS1-1 Construct an explanation based on evidence for how the  structure of DNA determines the structure of proteins   which carry out the essential functions of life through systems of specialized cells

HS-LS1-2 Develop and use a model to illustrate the hierarchical organization of interacting systems that provide specific functions within multicellular organisms
