Human Traits Bingo

Instructions: Listen as your teacher calls out traits, place a check in the box if you have that particular trait. You must do these in order they are called.

Teacher instructions: Cut out the squares from the grid so that you can pick the traits randomly or use the ppt file linked below.

Trait Descriptions can be found at the powerpoint file. If you do not have a projector, I recommend you just view the pictures and describe them to students and point out those within the class that have the traits.

Discussion Questions:

1. There are 5 traits on the board that are not based on a single inherited gene. In fact, these 4 traits may be learned traits rather than inherited traits. Can you pick them out? (broccoli, GPA, sports, instrument, popularity)

2. Why would playing sports be a learned trait and not one that is in your genes? How much does your family and friends influence your behavior, your likes and dislikes?

3. Are some of these traits more common than others? Can you make an educated guess about which inherited straits are dominant?

4. Left and right-handedness are assumed to be inherited traits, but scientists have not yet figured out the pattern of inheritance. It is not a dominant vs. recessive allele. Like many human traits, the patterns of inheritance are not well understood. What are some other human traits that are not on the board? (skin color, height, allergies..)
