Endangered Species
Internet Lesson Plan
Site: http://www.bagheera.com/
Objective: Students will investigate causes of endangerment and efforts being
taken to conserve species.
Instructions: Choose ONE of the projects below and research at bagheera.com
All information needed to complete the project can be found at www.bagheera.com.
1. Design a Reserve
Choose a species under Case Studies (See Vanishing Link) and imagine a reserve
that would meet the needs of that species and encourage recovery. Design a a
Visitors Pamphlet for the Reserve.
a) Include a short description of the reserve, what kind of habitat is it and
where should it be located.
b) Include an informational section that describes the species and reasons for
its endangerment
c) which lists the Rules and Regulations of the Reserve. What kinds of activies
are allowed, what kinds of activities are prohibited. (Example: No hunting.)
2. Investigate illegal trade in wildlife and wildlife parts.
Find out what animals are endangered due to illegal wildlife trade. See C.I.T.E.S
and Endangered Species Act and Asian Medicines (under Spotlight)
Choose 4 species that are exploited due to illegal trade (pet trade, medicines,
jewelry, souvenirs...etc) Make an outline that includes the following:
Species name:
Habitat:
Illegal Trade Market:
Other Causes of Endangerment:
Conservation efforts:
Create your Own Endangered Species Act. List the laws you would enact in order
to protect species endangered by exploitation. You should have at least 5 laws.
3. Design a chart and compares patterns of endangerment or extinction.
a) Chart should include the following categories of information: species;
scientific name; classification (e.g., mammal, reptile, bird,
amphibian); location (e.g., Brazilian rain forests); habitat (e.g.,
forest, ocean, grassland); population decline over time; causes of
endangerment (or causes of extinction, if extinct). Include at least 10
species.
b) What patterns or trends can you find? (Short paragraph)
