Evolution

1. Review the definition of theory and its relationship to evolution. Know that evolution is the unifying theory of biology

2 Understand that evolution has two aspects: descent from a common ancestor and adaptation to the environment.

3. Describe how the fossil record, biogeography, comparative anatomy, and comparative biochemistry support a hypothesis of common descent.

4. Compare the methods by which evoluationary change can occur: mutations and recombination.

5. Understand that natural selection causes changes in allele frequencies in a population.

6. Compare the three types of natural selection are: directional selection, stabilizing selection, and disruptive selection.

7. Describe how new species come about.

8. Describe how the fossil record allows us to trace the history of life on earth

9. Understand the factors that existed in earth's early atmosphere that lead to the development of cells

10. Describe primate characteristics and compare and contrast the different species of hominids as evidenced in the fossil record.
